The Roman gladiators were trained at a place called a Ludi, where they learned how to fight and defend themselves in the arena. It is estimated that approximatley 100 Gladiator schools existed in the heyday of the Colosseum. The novices swore an oath upon entering the school thet they would each give their lives to the gods of the underworld by an oath. The aspiring Gladiator was then put up for medical treatment to make sure he was appealing to the eye and capable of the rigorous training ahead. Each man was trained in one practise of gladiatorial combat, since it was unheard of to try more.
